Inland Empire Capoeira Instructor: Kristopher Gilder

Kristopher began his marital arts training at the age of 6. He received his initial instruction in the art of Kung Fu and, later Taekwondo where he received his black belt. At first glance, Kris fell in love with the art of Capoeira. He saw an illustration of this art in a popular film entitled Only the Strong. At that moment he fell in love with this elusive art and went in search of a Mestre. For 8 years, Gilder's Mestre guided him through the techniques and philosophies of Capoeira. Once Kris was ready, with the blessing of his Mestre, he began to teach the art of Capoeira.

Capoeira is simultaneously a dance, a fight and a game.

Philosophy

When people see Capoeira for the first time, they are intrigued by its swift movements and acrobatics. This beautiful art form encompasses so many aspects and I think that is why people are drawn to it. Capoeira is not only a combination of gymnastics, dance and martial arts but also music, culture, history and knowledge. The Capoeirista learns to balance the physical with the mental. one learns the instruments and songs. The Capoeirista is a historian. The Capoeirista is all of these.

Achievements

  • 1st Degree Black Belt
  • 1st Place ATA Regionals (sparring)
  • 1st Place ATA Regionals (forms)
  • Certified Self-Defense Instructor
  • ATA Black Belt Certification

Capoeira is for men, women and children; the only ones who don't learn it are those who don't wish to.

Respect

Capoeira is for all who care to participate. All students are required to respect the history, culture and philosophies of the art. Through the study of its history and through its practice, one will gain a deep appreciation for the art of Capoeira.

A good Capoeirista of course likes everything of Capoeira: the beats, the berimbau, the game; everything else is secondary.

Opinion

Students are encouraged to learn all aspects of Capoeira. The art requires that everyone participate by clapping hands, playing instruments and singing. This is how we develop as a team, this is how we lend our axe - our energy.
